The term Tessellate is mathematical terminology meaning to rotate, flip or move. I was instantly intrigued… not only did it sound like a cool concept for a game… the idea of only having to design a maximum of 2 artworks for a game meant loads of energy could be invested into the art and visual feel of the game. The brief seemed simple… that there was to only be one design on all the cards used! The cards could have different designs on front and back… but all cards had to be identical! Tim had conceived a potential rule set (mechanic) and was already playtesting. Tim said he had an idea for a game! It was triggered by a challenge laid out for a card game design comp. It was right at this point that things began to kick into gear! We learned the basic processes of designing boardgames and how the development process is a long one with lots of testing, reworking, retesting and more reworking!įrom that point on, Tim and I began discussing the real potential of some intentional collaboration! Of cause, we branded ourselves almost instantly and “GeeChamp Games” was born… and regular game design get togethers started! Text message after text message, idea after idea… the bank was filling up with concepts, rule sets and world design. It was at this expo, that we not only got inspired… we both attended a “game design workshop”. Tim on the insane mechanics and engine of the game… and me on the artwork, fancy design side… We both laughed it off for a few years… that is… until Tim and I attended a Boardgames expo.

Tim and I have an almost opposing mindset… and we often found ourselves talking about how collaborating on designing games could be fun. Yep! Thats right… Tim is one of those guys you will never win against in a boardgame! You see, since knowing Tim, I have learned that some people just dont “play” a boardgame… some people (like Tim) have this crazy ability to pull a set of rules apart in their mind and work out a strategy to “beat” the game! I kid you not!! Whilst Minds like mine are looking at the fancy artwork, box design and play pieces of a game, others are sizing up the rule set, calculating odds and assigning the perfect winning strategy! Overall, it’s a win-win.For many years now, Ive had the great privilege of knowing a guy that is best described as a pure genius! He has a mind that defies the laws of logic… that is… of-cause… when it comes to all things boardgame! Highly detailed models and textures are not easy to create, which is why a lot of game designers opt for tessellation.īy using tessellation, game designers can create stunningly detailed scenes quite easily and without using a ton of system resources. Then, high-quality texture and a displacement map can be added to it to achieve amazing visuals. The term cheaper does not refer to money, but the amount of resources it uses in your system.Ĭreating a low detail model is simpler. The simple answer is that tessellation is easier to accomplish and cheaper. So, what’s the purpose of tessellation, and why is it useful? There is no reason why a game designer couldn’t accomplish desired visual effects with a similar model that was designed with depth, scale, and adequate textures. However, the difference between normal, high, and very high tessellation levels is minuscule, so if you can manage with tessellation on, go big or go home. With that being said, if your monitor is lower quality, tessellation can decrease your fps by around 15% when it is enabled. There is really no reason not to keep it on.

Other visual effects, including HDR and depth of field, have a much larger performance impact than tessellation does. On average, you will only lose around a few frames per second, even with displays that heavily rely on tessellation. Research has been done on games that use tessellation, like GTA V, and it reveals that the impact on fps is minimal at best. Honestly, tessellation isn’t too hard on your fps. This effect allows a texture to store information about how far it protrudes from the base. Tessellation is normally combined with displacement mapping. Unfortunately, it does this at the cost of the system’s performance. Tessellation allows for the detail in any given scene to be increased. This construction technique allows for a smoother model that is of higher quality. This is done even if the original 3D model doesn’t include them.

Tessellation basically adds more edges between the points where segments connect, known as the vertex locations. This is how most 3D graphics are created. Typically, surfaces in three-dimensional games are constructed out of quads, which are made up of two triangles that are mashed together to form a square.
